The globe pans across continents, lights up one country at a time, and the browser listens. You will get the obvious anchors (Brazil, Japan, Egypt, Germany, Australia) and then the ones that catch you off guard: Bhutan tucked between India and China, Comoros north of Madagascar, Tuvalu in the open Pacific, São Tomé and Príncipe off the Gabonese coast. The mode is harder than any single-region quiz because the continent jumps unpredictably. One round you are saying Argentina, the next round Kyrgyzstan.

Treat each continent as a warm-up first
Run the regional quizzes (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania) once each before attempting the world set. The hard part of the world mode is not the countries themselves, it is the constant continent switch that breaks rhythm and pulls names from cold storage.
Have your tricky pronunciations ready
Kyrgyzstan, Djibouti, Côte d'Ivoire, Liechtenstein, Eswatini, São Tomé and Príncipe. These are the names that trip both the speaker and the recogniser. Practising them out of context, before they appear in rotation, saves a few seconds when the globe lands on them.
Anchor by neighbour
If you see Bhutan highlighted between India and China, the surrounding shape is doing half the work. Same for Lesotho inside South Africa, or Vatican City inside Rome. The voice engine is faster when your brain has already picked the answer from the geographic context.
Don't fight a missed match
If the engine misses you twice on the same name, skip and move on. Browser speech recognition has a known failure mode where it locks onto the wrong phoneme; insisting wastes the round. The next prompt resets the listener.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in the full rotation?
Around 195. The exact set follows UN membership plus widely recognised states like Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan. Disputed territories without broad recognition are excluded. The pool is the same across all language versions of the site.
Is the world mode realistic to clear in one run?
Most players miss between five and twenty on the first attempt and improve quickly. A clean run usually takes ten to fifteen sessions of practice. The voice format is faster than clicking once you know the names, so total time per attempt drops as recognition improves.
Can I use this hands-free while doing something else?
Yes, that is one of the points of voice mode. Cooking, walking around the room, or commuting with a phone propped up all work. Just keep the screen visible enough to see which country is highlighted; the prompt is visual, only the answer is spoken.
What happens if the speech API is not available?
The mode is disabled when the browser does not expose the Web Speech API. Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari work out of the box. Firefox needs manual activation in about:config (media.webspeech.recognition.enable). On unsupported browsers the menu redirects to click-based modes instead.
