Fourteen sovereign states are scattered across the Pacific, from Australia, the only country that is also a continent, to Nauru, the world's third-smallest state at 21 square kilometres. Most quizzes stop at Australia, New Zealand and maybe Fiji. This one keeps going: Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau. Several of them lie below two metres of average elevation, which makes them the most directly affected by sea-level rise. Saying their names aloud is also the easiest way to stop confusing Vanuatu with Tuvalu.

Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Nauru are not the same
Tuvalu is north of Fiji. Vanuatu is west of Fiji. Nauru sits alone northeast of Solomon Islands. Three short names, three completely different locations. The globe zoom helps; if you can see Fiji on screen, the highlighted neighbour is one of the first two.
Federated States of Micronesia is the long one
Often shortened to Micronesia in conversation, but the full name is the official one. The recogniser accepts both forms. Micronesia the country is different from Micronesia the subregion, which also includes Palau, Nauru, Kiribati and the Marshalls.
Kiribati is pronounced KIR-ih-bas
The final ti sounds like s in the local Gilbertese language, and the English convention follows it. The browser is more flexible than that and usually accepts kih-rih-BAH-tee too, but the local pronunciation tends to land on the first try.
Papua New Guinea is one answer
Three words, one country, one flag. Say all three. The capital is Port Moresby. PNG by initials is a common shorthand but is not always recognised by browser speech engines, so spell it out for reliability.
Frequently asked questions
Are dependencies like New Caledonia or Tahiti included?
No. The mode quizzes sovereign states only. New Caledonia and French Polynesia (which includes Tahiti) are French overseas territories. Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Marianas are US territories. None appear as separate answers in this rotation.
Why does the globe zoom so much for Oceania?
Several countries are tiny atolls. Tuvalu's land area is 26 square kilometres, Nauru's 21, the Marshalls 181 spread over 29 atolls. Without zoom you would not see what is highlighted, so the camera moves in close before each prompt.
Does the engine accept abbreviations like PNG or FSM?
Sometimes, depending on the browser. Recent Chrome usually maps PNG to Papua New Guinea, but Safari is less consistent. The full name is the safest answer if you want a clean run, especially on iOS or in noisier environments.
Is Hawaii in this quiz?
No. Hawaii is a US state, not a sovereign country, so it does not appear in any region. The same applies to Easter Island (Chile) and the Galapagos (Ecuador). The Oceania set is limited to the fourteen independent states recognised by the United Nations.
