It begins with a simple question on a quiz night in a Lisbon bar: which country has Chad's flag? Half the room says Romania. The other half says Chad. Both are right, because the two flags are identical except for one shade of blue. That accidental clash is one of dozens hiding among the world's roughly 197 sovereign flags. Indonesia and Monaco share a near-identical red and white bicolour. Slovakia, Slovenia and Russia overlap on a horizontal white-blue-red. Australia and New Zealand both fly the Southern Cross with a Union Jack canton. This quiz pulls flags from every continent and asks you to click the right country from a short, deliberately tempting list.

Tips to play better

  • Learn the famous traps

Romania and Chad share a vertical blue-yellow-red. Indonesia and Monaco share red over white. Slovakia, Slovenia and Russia all have horizontal white-blue-red. Côte d'Ivoire and Ireland mirror each other. Master these five pairings and the world quiz gets noticeably easier.

  • Spot the unique flags first

Nepal is the only non-rectangular flag. Switzerland and the Vatican are the only square ones. The United Kingdom Union Jack is unmistakable. South Africa's Y-shape is one of a kind. When one of these appears, you can answer instantly and save your decision time for the trickier rounds.

  • Group by continent in your head

Pan-African red, gold and green covers Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon, Burkina Faso. Pan-Arab red, white, black and green covers Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan. Bolivarian yellow-blue-red covers Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador. Group flags by region first, then narrow down.

  • Read coats of arms

Many Latin American flags repeat similar bands and rely on the central emblem to be unique. Mexico's eagle on a cactus, Bolivia's mountain, Ecuador's condor, Peru's vicuña and Spain's two pillars are all distinctive enough to recognise without colour cues. Train the emblems alongside the bands.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries does this quiz cover?

The default world pool uses the 193 United Nations member states plus the Holy See and the State of Palestine as observer states, plus Taiwan and Kosovo as commonly recognised states. That is 197 flags. Disputed territories such as Western Sahara, Somaliland and Transnistria can be enabled as a separate optional pool.

Which national flag is the most copied?

The French tricolour of 1794 inspired more than thirty national flags including Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Romania, Mexico, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates in their structural use of stripes. Ethiopia's red-yellow-green inspired most of independent Africa. The Stars and Stripes inspired Liberia, Malaysia and Cuba in their stripe-and-canton structure.

Why do Chad and Romania really have the same flag?

Both adopted vertical blue-yellow-red bands inspired by the French model. Chad chose its colours at independence in 1960 from Pan-African red, yellow and Sahel blue. Romania reverted to its 1848 design in 1989 after the fall of Ceausescu. The two governments have negotiated several times and agreed to coexist with their respective shades of blue.

Are the Olympic and UN flags in the quiz?

No. The quiz only includes flags representing actual countries or recognised states. Supranational and organisational flags such as the Olympic rings, the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union or the Commonwealth are excluded by design. The same rule applies to international sport federation flags.
