Capitals that share their country's name
Mexico City, Guatemala City, Panama City, Kuwait City, Vatican City, Singapore, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra la Vella, Djibouti, Luxembourg City. When the country name is also a city, the capital is almost always that city. A quick heuristic that wins points fast.

Don't trust the largest city
In dozens of countries, the political capital is not the largest city. India: New Delhi vs Mumbai. Pakistan: Islamabad vs Karachi. Morocco: Rabat vs Casablanca. United States: Washington D.C. vs New York. The shortlist will always include the largest as a wrong choice.

Around 195, matching the standard count of sovereign states (193 UN members plus Vatican City and Palestine, with adjustments for contested cases like Taiwan and Kosovo). The exact count depends on which reference list you use, but the quiz aims for the broadest reasonable definition.
Why are some answers shown with a slash?
When a country has more than one capital with different functions, both are listed and either is accepted. Examples: Sucre/La Paz, Amsterdam/The Hague, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte/Colombo. The 3D globe shows the country highlighted regardless, and the shortlist offers the relevant cities.
Which capital is hardest to remember?
From our rotation logs, the most-missed worldwide capitals are Yamoussoukro (Côte d'Ivoire), Naypyidaw (Myanmar), Ngerulmud (Palau), Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (Sri Lanka) and Funafuti (Tuvalu). Three of them moved within the last fifty years, and two are barely covered in mainstream geography classes.
Does the quiz use current names?
Yes. Astana since 2022 (formerly Nur-Sultan), Kyiv rather than Kiev, Türkiye recognised but matched on the English Turkey, Czechia accepted as Czech Republic. The reference list is updated when official changes are confirmed; planned moves like Indonesia's Nusantara stay pending until the move is complete.
