Most people think Europe is the easy continent until the highlighter lands on the Balkans. Try naming, in order, the countries between Slovenia and Greece without checking. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania — and that is only the western half. This quiz is built as a difficulty test: each round highlights one country on the 3D globe and gives you a short shuffled list. France, Germany, and Italy are warm-up rounds. The actual challenge starts when you reach the post-Yugoslav states, the three Baltic republics, and the micro-states (Andorra, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Monaco, Vatican City) that are easy to mix up. Forty-plus countries on the smallest continent except Oceania, and the borders are denser than anywhere else on Earth.

Tips to play better

  • Three Baltic states, north to south

Estonia at the top, then Latvia, then Lithuania at the bottom. The alphabetical order matches the geographical order from north to south, which is one of those rare gifts the world gives you for free.

  • Yugoslavia, broken into seven

Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia. All seven came from one country before 1991, and they are still the densest cluster on the European list. Learn this group together or you will keep losing points there.

  • The micro-states

Vatican City inside Rome, San Marino on a hilltop in central Italy, Monaco on the Riviera, Liechtenstein in the Alps between Switzerland and Austria, Andorra in the Pyrenees, Malta in the Mediterranean. Six small entries that are worth one point each.

  • Nordic countries are five, not four

Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland. Iceland is often forgotten because it sits alone in the Atlantic, far from the rest. The highlighter usually catches you off guard the first time it lands there.

  • Don't confuse Slovenia and Slovakia

Slovenia is small, alpine, on the Adriatic, neighbouring Italy and Croatia. Slovakia is landlocked between the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, and Austria. Same root word, very different locations.

Frequently asked questions

Is Russia included?

Yes, but only in the Europe rotation — the quiz classifies Russia as European because Moscow and most of the population are west of the Urals. The Asia regional pool does not include it. Russia also appears once in the World rotation.

What is the hardest part of this quiz?

The Balkans, by a wide margin. Six small countries with similar histories, sometimes overlapping flags, and borders that have changed twice in living memory. Players who score perfectly on Western Europe often drop ten points in this region alone.

Does the quiz include Kosovo?

Yes. Kosovo is treated as a separate entry. We follow the practical mapping convention — most modern atlases show Kosovo as distinct from Serbia — even though full UN recognition is not yet there.

How long does a full Europe round take?

Around five to seven minutes if you play steadily. There is no countdown timer in this mode, so you can take your time on the difficult cases. The point of click-name mode is recognition without pressure.
